Rising up from the Earth

A talk by Dr. Larry Ward

Bodhisattvas from distant realms looked upon the world with deep concern. Seeking to offer their assistance, they approached the Buddha to ask if they could help. And the Buddha said, “No, there are bodhisattvas rising from the earth right now to do the work.” (Chapter 15 of the Lotus Sutra)

Join us for this enlightening online talk as we delve into the profound teachings of the Lotus Sutra, a foundational Buddhist text that serves as the inspiration behind the Lotus Institute's name, history and vision for the future.

Dr. Larry Ward, co-founder of the Lotus Institute and senior Dharma teacher, will discuss the 15th chapter of the sutra, which focuses on the emerging of bodhisattvas from the earth. He will explore how this chapter relates to the complexities and challenges of our modern era, and how we as an organization are re-imagining our mission moving forward.

What is a Bodhisattva?
Bodhisattvas are individuals who embody deep understanding and are driven by great compassion to alleviate the suffering of all beings. They are activists, volunteers, teachers, parents, caregivers, gardeners, nurses and countless other changemakers who have an urge to help and to serve others.
